Lucy Carol Davis ’71 Makes Both Lifetime and Legacy Gifts to Support Future Scholars

Lucy Carol Davis ’71 grew up in Charlotte and went to the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem for high school. When choosing a college, she knew she wanted to be a bit farther from home at a co-ed school on the East Coast. She visited Swarthmore’s campus and fell in love with its beauty. She was also drawn to the Quaker attitude and the fact that students were involved in their studies and intellectual discussions.

For years, Lucy consistently gave to The Swarthmore Fund. When she started taking annual required minimum distributions from her IRA, she would support initiatives that aligned with her values. For example, she and her husband, Fred Emmerson, sponsored the Huddle Room in the new Dining and Community Commons because they liked the idea of a room that brings people together. Her goal is to leave 10% of her estate to her favorite charitable organizations.

As a student, Lucy composed music and played classical guitar. She also received a grant to travel to Europe in the summer to study manuscripts of Bach's Lute Suite No. 3. After graduation, Lucy stayed connected to Swarthmore by volunteering with admissions and conducting prospective student interviews.

Lucy encourages others to consider leaving a legacy gift to support future Swarthmore scholars. “We all had opportunities to engage in great discussions with professors and students and in small seminars,” she concludes. “I learned how to think and solve problems in a way that has benefited me my entire life.”
